Attention Deficit Disorder(ADD) has gained prominence in the press recently, as well it should. ADD, aside from being an extremely uncomfortable and perplexing condition, has particular relevance to the field of Addiction Psychiatry, as the prevalence of addiction in 5-7 times greater than the general population. Another way to look at it, if you have ADD the likelihood of becoming addicted at 50%-60%.

It also has particular relevance to longevity. A recent study demonstrates the life expectancy, of a person that has ADD, is significantly shortened because of two factors: “Stress” and “Negativity.”

A careful of adjustment of medications allows for progression to later steps in treatment, as medications for ADD shows that it influences only 25% of symptoms. The next to be addressed, after medications, is diet and nutritional supplements.

The final step in treatments, which will yield the greatest amount improvement is a certain type of meditation. This will reduce the anatomical and physiological basis for “stress” and negativity" and allow the seven parts of the brain which remain immature and dysfunction to restructure.

I carefully explain this to each patient in an effort that they may master self awareness and what they are experiencing.
